Applications are invited for a position as professor with special responsibilities in Fisheries Technology. The professorship is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua), Section for Management Systems.
The main research area of the Section for Management Systems comprises the development of tools and methods to improve integrated fisheries and marine ecosystem management. This includes the development of methods generating information needed for the advice on management, i.e. data from commercial fisheries, research surveys, differences in fisheries efficiency, economy and behavior in fishing fleets and development of catching technology. Objective is the implementation of ecosystem-based, spatially explicit management evaluation tools, representing both relevant human maritime activities and natural processes. Fisheries technology develops and explores catch methods that consider both the marine environment and the effectiveness and economy of the commercial fisheries in order to improve catching selectivity. Furthermore, research is conducted on simulation models that can be used to predict and understand the selective characteristics of fishing gears catch efficiency, discard and economic consequences.
Responsibilities and tasks
The professor’s research field is to advance our understanding of low-impact, selective and effective fishing methods which enable targeted fishing for specific species and sizes. The aim is to reduce by-catches and discards as well as to reduce the impact on the marine environment. The research is done in a combination of analyzing data acquired from commercial fisheries, computer based simulations, flume tank tests and sea trails in an interlinked approach.
An important focus will be on application, implementation and coordination of multidisciplinary research activities linking fisheries and environmental science, statistical and modeling approaches and using innovative technology to improve the environmental performance and effectiveness of fishing gears and fishing operations. Activities are expected to be conducted in cooperation with other research sections of the institute, other units at the university and relevant research groups in Europe, as well as fisheries management authorities and the fishing industry.
The professor is expected to improve the capacity of the institute for giving advice to managers of fisheries, policy makers and other relevant authorities as well as the industry and other stakeholders.
Finally, the professor will contribute to teaching in fisheries technology on master and PhD level, and supervise PhD students and postdocs.
A position as professor with special responsibilities is held for a limited time period and involves all the usual duties associated with a full professorship, as well as fixed-term specific duties which will vary according to the research program.
The position is intended for a candidate with a track record of internationally acknowledged research in fisheries technology and experience in giving advice on fisheries technology to public authorities, international advisory bodies, industry and other stakeholders.
An outstanding record in leadership including planning, implementing and running multidisciplinary research projects and international advisory groups is required.
Furthermore, knowledge of and visions for integrating research findings into fisheries management procedures and utilization of research results for improving the ecological and economic performance of capture fisheries are expected.
Candidates should have well-documented international recognition within their research field, being visionary in their scientific approach and able to initiate and coordinate crucial research activities.
In the assessment of candidates, particular consideration will be given to:
• the candidate's qualification for handling the special, function-related assignment(s) that are associated with the position
• scientific production at international level, research potential and ability to lead and develop a research team
• the ability to teach
• the ability to promote and utilize research results
• an all-round experience basis, including international experience
• the ability to contribute to the development of the department’s internal and external cooperation
• the ability to attract funding to the research area
• visions within the research area
Furthermore, consideration will be given to
• research leadership in implementing and coordinating multidisciplinary research groups and research programs comprising field, experimental and modeling activities
• experience in giving advice on fish and shellfish fisheries
Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
The position is available for a 5 year period and may be extended for up to 3 more years.
