Position at the FISHREG for 36 months - Ispra (Italy)

The mission of the Maritime Affairs Unit is to contribute to a safe, secure, resource efficient and competitive Europe by the development of scientific and technological methodologies for EU policies related to the sea. The unit focuses on novel methods and integration of different information sources for maritime surveillance, on assessment and forecasting for fisheries, and provides harmonized safety accident reporting tools for maritime, air and rail traffic.

The Action "Scientific Support to Fisheries" (FISHREG) provides tools, services and advice in support to the EU's Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). The activities carried out by the FISHREG Action include scientific advice to the Commission's Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF), the collection of fisheries data reported by EU Member States and the development of tools to support fisheries enforcement, such as the Vessel Detection System (VDS). The proposed position is for providing support to the collection, analysis, visualization and dissemination of geographical biologic and economic fisheries data hosted by FISHREG and other international organisations in the fishery sector.

The person should collect fishery spatial data from available data sources, establish databases to store the data, assist other scientists within the action in the production of maps and design and maintain a web based application for the dissemination of these maps.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. or a minimum of 5 years of research experience after the first degree giving access to doctoral studies. Jobholder will need research experience or a PhD degree in computer science or geographic information science (or a related discipline). Knowledge in Geographical Information Systems and Database Management Systems and SQL (Structured Query Language) is essential. Knowledge and experience in spatial modelling or web-based geo-spatial applications are desirable.
