Scientist at GEOMAR - Kiel (Germany)

The Collaborative Research Centre (Sonderforschungsbereich) 754 “Climate-Biogeochemistry Interactions in the Tropical Ocean” (www.sfb754.de) invites applications for a SCIENTIST in the research unit Chemical Oceanography of the research division Marine Biogeochemistry at the GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel (www.geomar.de). The SFB754 addresses the threat of ocean deoxygenation, its possible impact on tropical oxygen minimum zones and implications for the global climate-biogeochemistry system. The overall goal of the SFB754 is to improve our understanding of the coupling of tropical climate variability and circulation with the ocean's oxygen and nutrient balance, to quantitatively evaluate the nature of oxygen-sensitive tipping points, as well as to assess consequences for the Ocean's future.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in the development and application of analytical methods for the determination of stable nitrogen isotope signatures of dissolved nitrogen compounds (incl. NO3– and others) in seawater. The work is part of several subprojects of the SFB754 with the aim to decipher nitrogen pathways in the water column and in the benthic boundary layer of the eastern tropical South Pacific and tropical Atlantic Oceans.
Candidates must hold a MSc/Diploma or a PhD degree preferably in chemistry or biology or geosciences or environmental sciences or a related field. Experience with methods to determine stable isotopes is desired but not mandatory. The successful candidate is expected to participate in research cruises.
Preferred starting date is 1st September 2013. The funding of the position is limited to 31 December 2015; however, an extension may be possible. Salary and social benefits are according to Germany’s public sector TVöD E13 scale. Depending on qualification this can be either a PhD student position (75% E13) or a postdoc position (100% E13). Part-time employment is possible.
GEOMAR seeks to promote women in science, thus applications by women are explicitly encouraged and welcome. Women will be given preferential consideration in case of equal qualification and professional merit. In addition, GEOMAR supports the employment of disabled people. Disabled applicants will be given preferential consideration in case of equal qualification.
Please send your applications with a CV, a short motivation letter (in English) and the addresses of one or two referees by 15 August 2013 with the keyword "SFB754 N isotopes" to:
